Does Massage helps with TMJ? Face and jaw pain.

Oct 28, 2021

If you suffer from jaw aches, pain or clicking, or if you grind or clench your teeth, you’re not alone. Nine out of ten people hold stress in their jaw, and many suffer from temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ).

Common factors that make you prone to TMJ, face and jaw pain include:

  • having one dominant chewing side
  • teeth grinding – many people grind their teeth when they sleep, while others clench them during stressful situations and both put unnecessary stress on the jaw
  • whiplash injury to the neck – accidents where an air bag is deployed can cause TMJ difficulties because of the relationship between the bones in the upper neck, skull and jaw
  • wearing dentures that cause an imbalance in the jaw
  • orthodontia
  • chewing repetitively, which can weaken jaw muscles.

Common symptoms and problems I treat during my face and jaw pain work include:

  • pain or discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding areas
  • bracing, clenching and grinding teeth
  • morning jaw pain or fatigue
  • chronic pain or tenderness in the muscles around the ear, neck, face, upper back and shoulders
  • problems with biting or opening the mouth unevenly
  • difficulty chewing, swallowing, talking or yawning
  • locking of the jaw, either open or closed
  • clicking or grating sounds in the jaw
  • pain, catching or difficulty closing the mouth or opening it wide
  • facial pain/swelling
  • headaches/migraines
  • pain, stuffiness or ringing in the ears with no infection present
  • dizzy spells
  • difficulty sleeping
  • twitching face or eye muscles
  • sensitivity to light and noise

If you wonder if massage really helps to reduce teeth clenching or grinding and release tensions around your jaw? – The answer is YES, it certainly can help to relieve some of the painful symptoms that you may be experiencing from your TMJ syndrome.

Clinical Massage Therapy for face and jaw pain is a simple non-invasive way of treating these jaw-related problems, which can be caused by a wide variety of medical issues. It can also help reduce the frequency of headaches, migraines and reduce tension in the neck and shoulders.
